ASB MAGAZINE: Standard Sock Co is an Australian sock company that was first established in New York in 2014 and designed in Melbourne (VIC). Founded by Australian owners in NYC, Standard Sock Co specializes in socks designed for technical winter sports and the skate market. In recent years, Standard Sock Co returned to Melbourne and in November 2017, the company was acquired by Monocle Group. Monocle Group is owned by Ben Rennie a former Luxottica Executive and founder of Social Enterprise Common Goods.

“Standard Sock Co has demonstrated a super strong three years, however, the multiple cities in which the three founders were living were presenting unique challenges to the business. Through the acquisition, we had the opportunity to simplify the business and bring everything to one location,” said co-owner Nicola Rennie

The brand has a good presence in the USA, Japan and Australia with online being a strong focus for the brand in 2018.

“When we looked to acquire Standard, we felt we had the opportunity to turn it into something important and purpose driven. With socks being such a small category, we felt the change to a sustainable product was necessary. With our work on Common Goods, we wanted to continue our focus making products that do minimal harm, promote outdoor lifestyles and give back,” continued Nicola Rennie

“So, we have re-designed and re-imagined the brand from a product perspective and working with some of the world’s most progressive, sustainable factories. We are using re-purposed and recycled cotton, plastics that have been re-used from recovered fishing nets and nylons and rubbers from pre-used materials. The new collections dropping in 2018 will be Australia’s first sustainable sock company and one of only a handful in the world,” said Nicola Rennie

Standard has partnered with Common Goods and will invest 50% of all profits into the Huoshui Grouped Small Hydropower project in China, to offset their footprint of manufacture in China which will create six mini-hydropower stations, from small rivers providing villages with clean energy and create over 600 jobs when complete.
