ASB MAGAZINE: The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational for the 2021-2022 season could be held this  Hawiian winter if surf conditions permit, the Aikau family has announced. The event at Waimea Bay was canceled last season because of the pandemic. The holding period for “The Eddie” will start Dec. 1 and run through late February. Since the contest was launched in 1984, it’s been held nine times with the bay providing sufficient sized swells in the 20ft plus ‘Hawaiian’ range  for the world-renowned contest. Past winners include Eddie’s brother Clyde Aikau, Kelly Slater, Greg Long, Bruce Irons and John John Florence.  While you are waiting for the Eddie to run, the 2013 documentary  Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau by Sam George is steaming this week on SBS On Demand. The movie chronicles the remarkable life and times of the late Eddie Aikau, the legendary Hawaiian big wave surfer, pioneering lifeguard and ultimately doomed crew member of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea.
