|ASB MAGAZINE: Pro Surfing will be returning to the incredible waves on Phillip Island with the Phillip Island Pro set to call Cape Woolamai home again in 2019. The QS1,000 Men’s and QS1,500 rated Women’s World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series event has been held on Phillip Island the past 2 years and has seen pumping waves at a variety of locations across the island.
Held from November 7th – 10th, the event will once again be offering equal prize money to both Men and Women with a $20,000 prize pool for the event. Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said it was great to be welcoming world-class surfing back to Phillip Island in November.
“We welcome any opportunity to celebrate our beautiful beaches and incredible surf, so it is exciting to see this event returning to Phillip Island for the third year running,” Cr Tessari said. “We are proud to be supporting the Phillip Island Pro and I can’t wait to see some of our incredible local surfers out on the water for this event.”
Being the last combined regional QS event for WSL Australia / Oceania, the Phillip Island event will have huge ramifications on the regional rankings, particularly the men’s.
“WSL is excited to return to Phillip Island in 2019,” said GM WSL Asia Pacific Andrew Stark. “Cape Woolamai and the surrounding beaches have provided epic surf for the last two events and we can’t wait to see what this year holds. The Phillip Island Pro will be the last event on the WSL Australia / Oceania Regional Qualifying Series and will help decide the regional Champions for 2019. The regional winners will be given a seed into the QS6,000 and Challenger Series events for the first half of 2020 which can really jump start a young competitors career. With this in mind, there will be a lot on the line at this year’s event.”
This year’s event will include the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle that will crown the top Victorian Boardrider Club and select the team that will represent the state at the National Final in February 2020.
“Since its inception two years ago, we have seen incredible waves each year with last year providing some unforgettable action at Cape Woolamai,” said Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson. “This event is a fantastic showcase of the waves on Phillip Island but it also provides a great platform for Victorian surfers to gain points on the Qualifying Series without having to leave the state. Last year we saw Victorian India Robinson claim her first-ever Qualifying Series Victory at this event which helped her finish 21st in the World on the Qualifying Rankings. The sport development benefits of the event are huge.”
The primary event location will be Cape Woolamai, with the Penguin Parade, Flynns Reef, Right Point, and Surfies Point all available as backup locations.
The Phillip Island Pro is presented by the Bass Coast Shire and Victorian Government and supported by Ramada Phillip Island, Coastalwatch, Cancer Council Sunscreen, Kings Cars and Surfing World Magazine.
The 2019 Phillip Island Pro men’s and women’s event will run from November 6 – 10. For more information head to www.worldsurfleague.com and on the free WSL App.
