ASB MAGAZINE:  Australasian Surf Business Magazine is pleased to announce an exciting new digital awards platform: the 2020 ASB Awards, powered by ActionWatch. Built for the times, these inaugural awards will recognise leading brands within the action sports industry over the past financial year. And it’ll all happen remotely, at a safe distance – which means no-one will know if you’re only wearing the top half of your tux.

The Australian surf industry has had the 2020 from hell so far, but there’s brands and businesses out there responding brilliantly and the early signs of recovery are already beginning to show.

All brands are eligible to participate for free: as long as they’re sold in independent surf shops. And there’s no complicated entry process: surf shop customers determine the winners when they purchase their favourite brands and styles.

The ASB Awards powered by ActionWatch are determined by actual retail sales: they’re the top-selling brands and styles throughout the past financial year. Winners will be determined using Action Watch’s proprietary point of sale marketing intelligence, which crunches its way through around $2m in sales every month.

Commenting on the Awards, Australasian Surf Business Publisher Keith Curtain said:

“The pandemic and travel restrictions have hit us all hard, but they’ve also created a little opportunity to celebrate leading brands and products, through a completely digital awards structure. We also recognise brands and retailers are time-poor and don’t like to fill in exhaustive surveys.

“2020 started with devastating bushfires,” added Keith, “then floods that threatened the lives and livelihoods of many of our readers. And then the coronavirus…we wanted to find some positives, and provide our readers with a couple of highlights by announcing these digital awards which cap the sales winners for the last financial year to June 30.”

There are two primary awards – Best Selling Male and Female Brand, and Hottest Male or Female Brand x Styles – in each of the following categories:

  • Surfboards
  • Wetsuits (M/F)
  • Footwear (shoes/sandals)
  • Boardshorts
  • Swimwear
  • Eyewear (M/F)
  • Skateboards

The ASB Awards powered by ActionWatch are both economically and environmentally friendly, as they recognise the enormous costs to transport and accommodate staff to attend a physical award ceremony in addition to the carbon footprint involved. So instead, we’ll do an online announcement ceremony, and everyone’s invited. We encourage you to dust off the tux or the Little Black Dress, pour yourself a glass of something special and settle in for the announcement.

Winners will be announced in our next Digital Edition: more details and announcements to follow.

Here’s the Fine Print (If that’s your thing…)

To determine our Best Selling Brand x Style Awards, we use our Brand $ Share YOY Change measure. This measure calculates the absolute change in Brand $ Share from the time period selected, compared to the same time period in the prior year. The Hottest Brand X Style Award is determined by Sell Through or our Unit Sales/Inventory, which measures the ratio of monthly unit sales to month-end inventory. It is using the “sell through” concept but is slightly different than the traditional weekly sell-through metric retailers commonly use. It is simply taking our Avg Inventory measure and dividing it by our Avg Unit Sales measure. This measure gives an annual unit inventory turn rate when a 12-month period is selected.
