ASB MAGAZINE: Over 50 surfers participated in Surfing NSW’s free board rescue course Surfers Rescue 24/7 over the weekend, with all participants learning vital life-saving techniques. The Surfers Rescue 24/7 course provided crucial training to assist in an ocean emergency situation and ultimately save a life. The course was sparked by a need to cover the gap between patrolled beaches and remote beaches in an effort to reduce deaths from drowning in NSW.
The course was conducted and overseen by newly inducted Surfing NSW Life Member and Manly Surf School owner Matt Grainger as well as several Surfing NSW staff members and was attended by surfers from all over Sydney as well as Queenscliff and North Steyne Boardrider Club members and Member for Manly James Griffin.
The next Surfers Rescue course is tentatively slated to take place at Coffs Harbour throughout the Woolworths NSW Junior State Surfing Titles in July. More details will be available in the coming weeks.
World champion surfer Mick Fanning has also thrown his weight behind Surfing NSW’s program: “I’m really proud of Surfing NSW and the work they have done to make the Surfers Rescue 24/7 course available.”
“Most of us that have spent our lives in the sea have been involved in helping someone in distress at some point or maybe needed help ourselves. It only takes a few hours and it could help you save a life, it might even be your own,” said Mick Fanning
