ASB MAGAZINE:  Surf Lakes Holdings Ltd, the company behind the construction of Australia’s first full-scale wave lake in Central QLD, is proud to announce that global surf industry legend, Nev Hyman, has been appointed to the organisation’s Advisory Board. Hyman has been a staple of the surf industry after being at the forefront of the development of surfboard design and manufacturing technology for over four decades as the founder of Nev Future Shapes and then Firewire Surfboards. Firewire Surfboards was acquired in 2015 by 11-time World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater.

In more recent times Hyman has claimed global notoriety for his development of Nev House, which produces affordable, truly off the grid, eco-friendly homes, school classrooms, medical clinics and other structures made from recycled materials. The structures are ideal for developing nations or disaster relief due to the capacity to build a structure in less than five days.

Hyman and his Nev House concept, in recent months, even took out the coveted Pitch @ Palace after he presented to members of the Royal Family and other business luminaries.

Hyman, has rightly described himself as a visionary, so when Surf Lakes founder and CEO, Aaron Trevis first met with Hyman, he was suitably impressed by Hyman’s amazing knowledge of the artificial wave space as well as his belief in the Surf Lakes concept.

Combined with his many years of business experience, as well as his driving desire to “give back”, Trevis immediately saw potential for Hyman to become a part of the growing Surf Lakes team, which already includes former surfing world champions Mark “Occy” Occhilupo and Barton Lynch.

Over the past two decades, as Hyman focused on the development of clean surfboard manufacturing technology, he watched with interest as companies were developing wave pool technology.

“I’ve kept watching everyone else do their thing and I met with Wavegarden in the early days and this sparked my interest,” states Hyman. “Then Kelly’s pool evolved and I have followed the space very closely over the past decade.“

So why Surf Lakes?

“I always thought that a wave lake/pool needed to be commercial and needed waves of all different shapes and sizes for all abilities,” said Hyman. “And this is what I liked the most about Surf Lakes as it has something for everyone and has enormous commercial viability. That is not to say the others don’t have their place, however Surf Lakes is more aligned with what I had in mind 20 years ago.”

As Trevis saw after his first meeting with Hyman, there was so much that Hyman could offer Surf Lakes in an advisory capacity.

“As an entrepreneur, I have my radar on all the time,” said Hyman. “And I am constantly meeting people who can contribute to the cause. But due to the success of Nev House in winning Pitch @ Palace I have been introduced to people whom I would not have imagined meeting in 10 lifetimes as a surfer from the Gold Coast!

“I feel I’m now living outside the surfing bubble,” said Hyman. “And because of that, I am speaking to movers and shakers around the world, who want to experience surfing and the unique lifestyle which to many people is almost mystical.

“At last we have a wave lake that will deliver surfers and beginners an incredible experience in a controlled environment,” Hyman continues. “Everybody I meet when talking about Nev House, I am talking about Surf Lakes – there is so much synergy. Outside of our surfing bubble, if you asked anyone if they would like to learn to surf – they say “yes!”… Surf Lakes can open the door for so many to experience what we know as being so special.”

ABOUT SURF LAKES

Gold Coast based Surf Lakes has developed a wave lake using concentric wave technology that is able to produce high quality surfing waves. Construction of a full-scale demonstration Surf Lake is close to completion near Yeppoon, Central QLD. Surf Lakes technology will be able to produce up to 2,400 high quality surfing waves each hour because every wave produced, breaks on eight reefs situated around the lake. Surf Lakes plans to license their technology around the world to build standalone surf parks, or incorporate into larger entertainment precincts such as resorts or theme parks. Surf Lakes was founded in 2015 by engineers Aaron Trevis and Chris Hawley. Reuben Buchanan (Executive Director) and Wayne Dart (Media Director) joined in 2016 to help bring the dream to life.
