ASB MAGAZINE: Firewire will release a new super light and durable surfboard that uses (sheep friendly) wool instead of fiberglass.  Firewire’s ‘Woolight’  technology was developed in partnership with Kiwi innovator Paul Barron of Barron Surfboards and The New Zealand Merino Company (NZM). Firewire debuted The Rob Machado design Go Fish using the Woolight technology at SurfExpo Orlando Florida in January.

However, Australian retailers will have to wait until June to get their hands on the ‘Woolight’ Rob Machado Go Fish. According to Firewires’ Mark Price who is here in Australia this month.  “The product won’t get to retail (here in Australia) until late May, possibly even June,” Mark Price told ASBMAG. “Aussie retailers have not even seen samples yet!”

The Woolight board and presumably Rob Machado’s effortless charm won over many in attendance at Surf Expo with one buyer admitting “The Woolight Rob Machado Go Fish quickly sky rocketed to the top of my board wish list. Plus, the Firewire guys were also just super cool to talk with.”

The founder and creator of the new ‘Woolight’ technology is Paul Barron of Barron Surfboards. In 1997, after amassing a wealth of knowledge in the composite industry, Paul Barron  started Barron Surfboards in Christchurch New Zealand. After spending 20 years in the South Island, Barron Surfboards moved North and is now based in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty.

Paul Barron is no stranger to innovation or commercial partnerships. Paul’s innovative skills lead him to develop Barron Flex or (FlexBar) Technology, in collaboration with Channel Islands Surfboards.

“The Flexbar name and technology I solely developed and patented, which I licensed out to Channel Islands,” Barron told ASBMAG. “Barronflex is a sub name of that technology and I have self-funded all of my technology to date,” said Barron.

Barron and Firewires ‘Woolight’ technology is about to take another step onto the global stage thanks to a partnership with The New Zealand Merino Company (NZM). According to NZM, their business model offers more sustainable solutions including direct fiber supply contracts based on fair prices that both the grower and retail brand can work with. According to the company’s website, “This provides price certainty, guarantee of supply, enhanced quality through ‘fit-for-purpose’ consignments, and traceability.”

Over the last 15 years NZM  have targeted leading global brands across varied market segments; luxury, fashion, active outdoors, children’s wear and interior textiles.

Due to the products pending release in Australia and given the importance of this to NZM (a publicly traded stock on the NZX) all parties involved both Firewire and Barron Surfboards could not elaborate more on the partnership or technology. More information is expected to drop sometime in May.
