Kelly Slater (USA) surfing a heat in the Quiksilver Pro. The 1996 Quisksilver Pro held in the waves of Grajagan, better known as G-Land, on the coastline of a nature reserve on the southern-most tip of east Java was won by Shane Beschen (USA) with Gary ‘Kong’ Elkerton (AUS) in second place. It was the second Quiksilver Pro, G-Land, that set the true concept of the ASP ëDream Tourí in motion. The late 80s and early 90s saw a growth in events based close to metropolitan areas, but the Quiksilver Pro, G-Land took a step away from that. Its emphasis was on quality waves, rather than quality crowds. Surfer Magazine calls Quiksilver’s G-Land Java Pro ìThe greatest ASP contest ever . . .î. Surfing Magazine says, ìMore than a contest, more than a surf trip, the Quiksilver Pro redefined professional surfing . . .î Witness a select group of the worlds greatest surfers in some of the best contest waves ever ridden.” Photo: joliphotos.com
