ASB MAGAZINE: Surfing Australia is proud to announce former World Champion Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew’s softboard brand ‘Bugs Softboards’ as the official Surfboard Partner of the nudie SurfGroms Program for the next three years in a massive boost for kids learning to surf around Australia. Catering for youngsters 5 -12 years old, and with over 60 nudie SurfGroms program deliverers around Australia, nudie SurfGroms offers kids the opportunity to learn to surf while developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives.

“Developing Bugs Softboards came from a bunch of inspirations and surf experiences with my own kids. Kids are all different, some are fearless, but most require a gradual introduction to the watermanship journey”, commented Rabbit on the motivation behind Bugs Softboards.

“We have the technology to make pretty insane softboards, and the final inspiration came from watching a 9-year-old girl go from a once a week surfer to a frothing grom, paddling fast, catching a ton of waves on her own and connecting sections to the beach in just a couple sessions on a Bugs Softboard prototype”, Bugs went on say.

Bugs Softboards are purpose-built to give learners and first-time participants the best experience possible as they learn to surf. While standard softboards can often hinder a beginner due to over-flexing, Bugs Softboards have a high rigidity core and a lamination sequence that provides a super sturdy, safe and stable platform so beginners can easily jump to their feet and confidently ride waves. They’re also designed to withstand the toughest of treatment associated with repetitive surf school use.

Since nudie SurfGroms was launched in October 2011, more than 70,000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time, and registrations for the latest programs are now open, just in time for summer.

Surfing Australia’s CEO Chris Mater said, “We are really excited to have Bugs Softboards support the nudie SurfGroms program. Rabbit has been an amazing supporter of Surfing Australia and our programs, so to have the 1978 World Champion now involved in one of our critically important programs via an endorsed product line is amazing.”

Each child signing up to the program will receive a nudie SurfGroms rash-vest and a participation logbook featuring everything you need to get you through the program and becoming a surfer for life.

nudie SurfGroms programs are available through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network with more than 60 delivery partners around the country.

Parents can register their children through the website – www.surfgroms.com – which will provide contact details for their closest delivery centre.

nudie SurfGroms is backed by major support sponsors Woolworths along with Hyundai, Bugs Softboards, 2XP® SPF 50+, Surfing Australia and Sport Australia.
