ASB MAGAZINE: Globe has opened its latest ‘cabin’ store in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong. On hand to help celebrate (and tirelessly sign autographs for five straight hours) was skateboarding legend Rodney Mullen as well as Globe CEO Matt Hill and Globe Founder Peter Hill together with the Globe sales team also in town for the company’s annual sales meeting.

“The feel of a Globe cabin store is more important to us than just the look of the store. Boardsports is a culture with a huge emotional content. Riding waves, concrete transitions, drops on virgin mountain runs are all physical experiences transformed into emotion, and feel,” commented Peter Hill.

The design of a Globe Cabin pays homage to the Arts and Crafts movement founded by Elbert Hubbard (not the scientologist). Hubbard founded Roycroft in the 19th century in New York. The philosophy of Hubbard was to make consumer products but with craft and purpose. Initially as a successful brand builder and capitalist Hubbard became the first rebel against the uncontrolled industrial age and reminded people that what they were buying needed to deliver more than a thrill of a purchase and had to deliver some emotional connection to the lifestyle they valued. He was the world’s first hippy.

“Hong Kong is the city we love most in Asia. The energy and sense of adventure and Hong Kong’s long history as a place to step out and explore from makes it a natural choice for the Globe cabin. The store retains its original Hong Kong tiled floors (sadly disappearing in much of 21st century HK), and meshes with the oak arts and crafts style from other Globe cabin stores with its Anglo influence. Hong Kong locals live in the Globe lifestyle in their own unique way. We are proud to be part of the Sheung Wan neighborhood,” said Peter Hill.

Globe Cabin stores are located globally in neighbourhoods where they can make a real cultural connection to the locals and their scenes, places where Globe’s deep 30-year boardsports heritage can resonate and contribute.

Globe Cabin stores are currently located in Sheung Wan, Hermosa Beach, Hossegor, Canggu, Kuta, Burleigh Heads, Bondi Beach, Torquay, and St Kilda.
